So I've just returned from www.dieantwoord.com now before you crucify me, I was sent the link by a friend who's girlfriend is in the music business and despite my initial disgust I suddenly find Die Antwoord intriguing.
I reccommended the site to The Source when I just recieved it as I thought he might appreciate a good laugh. See these guys and girl have scored themselves a deal of sorts and will be touring abroad. Now besides my deep misgivings about this foul mouthed lot being the voice of South Africa abroad (thankfully most of their lyrics will make no sense to foreigners) and I am horrified that this lot are probably going to make a lot more money than the many many other more talented SA musos trying to get their big break, they kinda grew on me... Eish yeah I hate to admit it.
OMW does this mean I'm common?
You see I'm from Cape Town and as common and raw as these guys and girl from Die Antwoord are, they've put toghether a site and a sound that reminds me of home. I had to ask my buddy after listening to the whole album, "does this mean we're common?" apparently not but it's boerderline. Yes there are a few turns of phrase, and some expletives and some of the grit in their lyrics that is instantly recognizable as Cape Town. In fact I sent the Die Antwoord link to my much more educated brother in the UK and even he had to admit it made him remember how diverse a place Cape Town. Actually he used much more colourful language. However I'm much less convinced that these Antwoord dudes should be strung up. I figure if we have to put up with that fool and his hart that klops tjoklits why not give these guys their day in the sun.
So after listening to the Die Antwoord (my personal favourite is Rich Bitch) I'm still slightly amazed that this scruffy bunch managed to get a record deal, but you know what maybe my brothers and sisters from Brooklyn should be given the benefit of the doubt :) Maybe this is the sound of South Africa.
God help us all.

This is just the afrikaans version of straight outa benoni, but only better (or more intense anyway) I think a lot more effort is going into their "marketing" and brand than you would think
It is called post-post-modernism if you ask me.....
Anyway, it is not their first time around the block, this guy was previously known as MaxNormal.TV
....and finally it just goes to show that if you say p#@$ every now and then, people secretly admire you for some reason.
