Ok this is not my review of Avatar I am a little bit too tired and too emotionally drained to write a full review now. To put this little Avatar teaser into perspective I used to manage the movie theatre I watched Avatar in up until about 18 months ago. Upon arriving at the cinema I found the place a mess. Lines everywhere no management presence poor maintenance. When I eventually made it into the Avatar Theatre I was in a rather crap mood and was really convinced that I wasn't going to enjoy Avatar or any part of my evening.
Take a quick bow Mr. Cameron and enjoy Avatar's success
So as I sat in my seat waiting for Avatar to begin, sullen at the fact that my successor somehow undid 2 years of my hard labor the trailers ran and Avatar began and I forgot to be annoyed somewhere during the trip to Pandora I forgot I was meant to be using my angry face. I've seen enough movies to know this Avatar thing was going to be something special, and right from the off it was clear that James Cameron had achieved what he's set out to do with Avatar.
The bar has been raised by Avatar not just for 3D cinema but for storytelling on the big screen. Avatar achieves a seamless integration of technology and great acting built around an engaging and strangely believable story. Avatar is everything that the cinema has been missing. It is a special effect movie where the special effects are woven around the characters it accentuates the action, helps build the tension. The special effects are in no way distracting which is a feat in itself as I sit back now and consider how good the effects were. By the end of it all you'll have completely forgotten about special effects. You'll have forgotten about actors or story. You will find yourself in Pandora, your belief well and truly suspended. Avatar is an out and out action movie. There is a message in it all about our society and attitude to our planet but it stops short of being preachy while still backing up the solid story.
I heart cinema, thanks Avatar
The best thing I can say about Avatar is that James Cameron's Avatar reminded me how much I love the cinema. Avatar reminded me about the magic that happens in the flickering dark of a cinema. Having worked as a cinema manager for nearly 9 years I forgot that.
My Avatar review will follow shortly :)
