Once again Vodacom and MTN are not providing BlackBerry owners access to certain apps via the BlackBerry App World, which is installed on their devices.

You might remember that I had to do a manual install of the App World using DOS a few month before it was available on our networks.  The main reason then was because of the PayPal account requirement for some applications (weak excuse).

So tonight I picked up via Twitter that Paul Jacobson had a problem getting EverNote on his BlackBerry.  At first I thought it was an OS problem because EverNote requires the BlackBerry OS 4.6 or better to run.  It does run on OS4.5 but it give some problems.

Now it seems that the problem is once again Vodacom and MTN.

Not a problem.  Let's work around them once again, but this time it will be much easier.

How to install EverNote

You are going to need to do the following:

  • Check your OS version (Storm2 and Bold2 should have 5 by default)
  • Download the install packages
  • Install using your BlackBerry desktop software

To check you OS version on your BlackBerry go to:

Settings/Options => About => Check for v4.5.0.37/v4.6+

OK, if that is your OS then you can run EverNote on your device.  Otherwise do an update on the OS.

Downloading the install package.

You need to download according to your device.  This will download to your PC as ZIP files:

Now extract the files you downloaded to a folder.

Installing the EverNote Application

To install the EverNote application you need to have the BlackBerry Desktop software installed on your PC.  You would have received this on the disc when you bought you device, alternatively you can download it here:  BlackBerry.com

Now connect your phone, open the software and do the following:

  • Select Application Loader
  • Select Add/Remove Applications
A few checks will run now to make sure all your software is upgraded to the latest versions
  • Bottom right of the screen select Browse and point toward the folder where you un-zipped the Evernote downloaded Zip file
  • Click on Evernote.alx
  • Click on the NEXT button and installation will commence.
This will take about 5 minutes.  Do not unplug your phone from the PC.  A restart of your BlackBerry is normal.
While this is busy go to EverNote Registration and open an account.
Once all of this is done you can go to your Download folder and you will see the following icon added (the big green one, you can't miss it).
And once you select that you can login...
Maybe soon Vodacom and MTN will stop treating us like children and give us access to the same applications they enjoy in the US and UK.  Enjoy.

I've been using Nokia's software installer for years so I don't pay 3G rates for downloading apps!
