During this phase of my job search I have decided to focus some of my free time to increase my earning by writing.
I have written a few articles that are scattered around the Web, but so far the earnings have been fairly meagre. There have been only a few months where my income from writing has exceeded R1000.
Perhaps this slow start is related to the effort that is put in. If I increase the effort ten-fold, my income should increase by more than ten times.
I have toyed with the idea of freelancing, but have not taken the plunge. I havenot been that impressed with sites like Elance where the lowest bid wins. My problem is the lack of experience and guidance.
Is there anyone on this site that can provide useful pointers to get started?

I freelance for a while and the best advice I can give is to not go through sites like Elance. Rather approach the sites/ publications that you want to write for directly. Either contact them with a solid idea or a fully written story-don't ask to be "put on their books". Also, try putting up an ad on a site like biz-community-they have a section where you can put up a work wanted ad. I have had several offers from there-including a very lucrative three month contract once. Good luck.
