Yet another manipulation of Facebook! PDF Print E-mail
Is Patricia Lewis dumb? Well, yes! Seriously. I hardly ever see any of her gigs advertised on Facebook. But then again, maybe she has given up on her singing career...

Facebook is the perfect marketing tool for celebrities in the entertainment industry. They can keep in touch with their fans, groupies and stalkers and they can let them know of any news regarding their latest projects, gigs, etc.

But I have to ask, why would the celebrity put themselves at such further scrutiny to the public by having profiles? The answer is simple. To keep the fans happy! I know for a fact that these people have over 4000 friends and I am guessing that a large percentage of that number are their fans! They must love the attention and who can blame them when they can use the platform as a marketing tool.

Yet another way that Facebook is being manipulated.

So many of us have a celebrity of some sorts that we admire, draw inspiration from or even want to procreate with in some alternate universe. You may even be lucky enough to have one of these famous people as a friend on facebook so you can take a look at their photographs and peek at what they are getting up to every now and then. Of course, this type of voyeurism can get a little alluring especially if it's a celebrity you are extremely fond of and wanna hunt down and have his/her babies.

This is exactly where the marketing ploy comes in. The famous person lets you into his/her life by allowing you access to his/her profile, while at the same time advertising gigs, new projects and such!

I'd say it's damn clever! Damn clever, indeed!

Gemma, you sound surprised that a celebrity may use a form of media to promote themselves? I can't see that it is 'clever'... Surely, that is one of the basic ideas of Facebook - so you can stay in contact not only with your circle friends, but be kept up to date with your specific interests? I rarely use Facebook...but I recognise that many people use it as their main portal of digital social interaction. It allows them to be kept up to date on their friends, but also their interests, and even causes.

I tend to use RSS readers in the same way, I suppose. Google reader is my first port of call, after reading my emails. And I can immediately see if anything new has happened on the particular issues / websites / causes that interest me.

Not manipulation: that is web 2.0 in action, as it was meant.

The nice thing about Web 2.0 is that the "manipulation" works both ways. Rather than having to sit through the advert breaks, or be constantly bombarded with adverts, Web 2.0 gives the end user the power to view what they want to view. Not only can we see what we want, when we want, but with various add ons and bits of clever software, we can even kill the various adverts on the pages that we visit...

The control has subtly shifted further over to the end user. Anyone who, commercially, does not take notice of that is going to find that they may struggle in the future. We no longer have to rely on the 'traditional' news agencies to find out what is going on. We no longer need to rely on the big telecommunications services to communicate (well...OK...for the moment, most of us still do in SA!!). We don't have to wait for the books to be written...we can "witness" the events ourselves, through blogs, youtube, Twitter, Facebook and the like. We can make immediate comparisons, and checks of what we are being told. Rather than wait for the information to be published, printed, and spread, we can see the raw data collection ourselves. We can read the papers the moment they are created, rather than having to wait...to fit into a large corporate's schedule...
