S_t_r_e_t_c_h_i_n_g your budget! PDF Print E-mail

In these trying times it has become essential that all of us stretch every single cent we have to its limits.  If you have already cut down on your expenses and are already eating bread for breakfast, lunch and dinner it still amounts to quite a staggering groceries bill at the end of the month.  Never mind how paying tax on tampons enrage me, the exorbitant costs of bread, margarine and accompanying condiments are infuriating!

A few years ago an innovative friend shared a wonderful budget saver with me.  I use it every month as it saves me a considerable amount of money.

Doubling a brick of margarine!

You will need a 500g brick of your favourite yellow margarine.  I prefer Stork Margarine.  Unwrap your margarine and place it in a mixing bowl to soften.  Boil one cup of water and leave it to cool.  It is essential that the water is boiled and left to cool or else your attempt will fail.  You will also need a cup (the same size as the water cup) of cooking oil.  It could be sunflower or olive oil, depending on individual tastes and level of income. Once your water is cool and your margarine soft enough to beat, mix all the ingredients together and beat until it is well mixed.  Good exercise for the biceps if you don’t have an electrical mixer.  Once it has the look of a rather pale margarine, add salt to taste and refrigerate in a suitable container.  Your margarine should now be doubled and as an added bonus doesn’t really get hard in the fridge!

Best wishes for tough times… in time, it shall pass.

The Olive Oil largely depends on your budget! :sigh
But my daughter embarra*sed me, telling her teachers what we eat at home when they were learning about nutrition. :eek Therefore I make every effort to ensure that she takes good sarmies to school.
