Three Business Science graduates from the University of Cape Town have set up a technology company that offers VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology for cellphones. What this means is that users of their communication service can make free cellphone calls to other users. They are not only the first South African company to offer this service, but one of the first companies worldwide to do so. The Cape Town based Yeigo Communications, has launched Yeigo, an innovative application for cellphones which uses a phone’s internet connection to offer cut price calls and SMS messages. Calls to other Yeigo users, anywhere in the world, are free - all you pay for is the standard cost of internet data connection charged by your service provider. Calls to other networks, landlines and international destinations are up to 80% cheaper, while SMS messages are as much as 90% cheaper, the company claims. Founded by Wilter du Toit, Lungisa Matshoba and Rapelang Rabana, Yeigo is a locally developed service. “So often engineers and scientists in SA have a fear that they can’t compete against their high tech-peers in the US, Europe or Japan but Yeigo is testimony that we can,” says Managing Director Rapelang Rabana. “The technology around ‘Voice over IP’ is new, especially in the mobile and wireless area, and this sort of technology will become more and more important as voice and data networks converge.” Yeigo looks set to become a formidable force in the telecommunications market, taking on the likes of Vodacom and MTN head on by providing a low-cost alternative. “The private and informal markets spend billions annually on telecommunications. As a result of their high telecommunications demand, this market is particularly conscious of the cost of communication and bringing down their monthly expenditure is a major concern,” explains Rabana, “Yeigo has the ability to redress this”. Yeigo operates on compatible mobile phones that use the Windows Mobile or Symbian Operating Systems with Wi-Fi, EDGE, 3G, HSDPA connections. The use of Yeigo does not require the user to switch from their cellular operator but offers users another value-added service they can use in conjunction with their service providers. Yeigo integrates with the user’s phonebook and call register so they can access these features as they did before without having to reload them, thereby ensuring that the user need not learn a new way of calling.
