Now it seems that many Irish soccer fans have begun cancelling their bookings for the 2010 World Cup. It is a great shame. It would have been great to have them all here for the duration.
Perhaps the French will take up the slack.
The problem is with soccer. While other sports have made adjustments to allow for the use of technology, this has been resisted in the world of soccer. Wrong refereeing decisions are common. A goal may be disallowed based on an incorrect observation. Penalties are incorrectly awarded or not awarded. It is not unusual for the fate of a team to be decided by a poor decision.
FIFA has resisted the use of technology for controversial decisions in soccer. It would ruin the flow of the game. This is true to some extent. Rugby is quite different - a much more stop-start-stop-start type of game.
But it is only critical decisions that would use the help of the TV cameras. Decisions such as the one that should have been made against Thiery Henry. That goal would have been disallowed. Instead, Ireland is out of the Cup.
The technology is available. It has not had a negative impact on rugby, tennis or cricket. It is used sparingly when required.
Why not use it for soccer?

Barmarr, I disagree. I think that the use of technology has had a HUGE negative impact on Sport. It holds up games, and provides an unpleasant unneeded break (where, expecially in rugby, many of the players cool down, risking injury when play re-starts). Watching the rugby over the weekend there were several instances where the ref called for TV review, when he was the best placed person to make a decision. When I played, the ref's decision was final...if he ruled a try was scored, then it was a try...
BUT...what we need is for sportsmen to have some integrity, and honesty, and not to cheat... If all the people involved agreed, for the good of the sport, not to interrupt the play, but to rely on the players to be honest, then I am sure it would improve the viewing pleasure. Of course, if anyone were found to be cheating like M. Henry, then heavy penalties should be applied (how about being dropped from the team, for bringing the game into disrepute???).
I mean, if my children are playing a game, or sport, and one of them cheats, then I stop them playing, and others do not want to play with a cheat anyway...
Cheating should be unnacceptable behaviour, in any sport. I shall be cheering for anyone but France, in the 2010 event.

Dissol, interesting observations.
Unfortuanately sport is ruled by money. Players are instructed not to own up to something unless the ref calls it.
More integrity would be great.

Barmarr, but why should we, as the paying public accept such lack of integrity? Just because money is involved? if anything that should be move reason for them not to cheat. In business, I have had to deal with crooks and cheats at times, & generally they learn that their behaviour is unacceptable. If you cheat where there is money involved, then there is more reason to be penalised, either financially or through missed opportunities.

Dissol, I agree with you totally.
Unfortunately, ethics seem to be a dying thing.
There is very little concern with ethics and principles in business or sport.
Years ago, sport used to be the example. There was something called sportsmanship. We had sayings like "its just not cricket" is someone cheated.
Now its all about money. If a player would own up to a violation that the referee had missed, he would probably be subject to disciplinary action!
The problem then, is how to get back to that set of values, the spirit of sportsmanship and fairness?
