Instead of the usual criticisms of how they played, demands for a new coach, or attacks on the player selection, all the focus has been on the few minutes that preceded the game.
This time at least, it is not the Boks bearing the brunt of harsh words. Instead t is Ras Dumisani, the killer of the SA National Anthem.
Ras has been out of South Africa since 1992. He lives in Paris and is a successful reggae singer. Living in Paris, he left our shores before the new anthem was compiled and being away from the land, must have paid little attention to it.
Then there was another problem. He couldn't hear himself sing. Someone should have given him the words, though.
Ras' 3 minutes has provoked more discussion than the game. France won, but that fact has paled into insignificance.
Perhaps we are losing a sense of balance.

Apparently the SA flag was also flown upside down...

both of these points are beside the point. Blaming the flag and the anthem instead of trying to improve our game is so typical of the SA mentality. Sweat the small stuff and take no responsibility. Shocking.

The anthem does play a part though in getting the team fired up. The All Blacks don't do the Haka for nothing.

Damn! I find myself agreeing with Koo again :eek Still it is basically the same point as before... so this does not count. :p

Ras, was on Gareth Cliffs show on 5FM this morning. He apologised profusely, saying that he had 'let his people down'. I have to admit that he sounded sincere. Gareth then proceeded to ask to him sing the anthem again & he obliged. It was still crap but I don't think he meant any harm.

I feel sorry for Ras. If you can't hear yourself its impossible to carry a tune. Have you ever tried singing with headphones on? Sounds ridiculous. I think he's had a raw deal.

Eish I don't know...it did not sound good. Look on that level we need everything not part of the game to be a breeze.
Did you guys hear the US anthem sung by someone at some Baseball championship in the US...the same thing happened, only this time the woman sounded like she was on crack!

Poor Ras. If only he'd had a chance to learn the song before the game. Using the same equipment, La Marseillaise sounded perfect.

I have an idea...why is a singer needed at all?? :? I mean in the (good) old days there was never a vocalist, they had a band and the crowd sang the anthem. Being in Cardiff Arms to listen to the crowd sing the Welsh Anthem made the hairs stand up on the back of your neck...
In fact while they are about it thay can also get rid of the cheerleaders too, and the other nonsense that they play over the PA systems. That has nothing to do with the game.

I'm with Dissol on this one. In fact in 1995 I stood singing the LOOOOOONNNNNNNG version of our national anthem to the band at Twickenham when the boks played England. No singer present and non needed those few thousand South Africans could be heard but were overpowered by God Save the Queen.
Now anyone actually see that the Flag was upside down? I didn't and that has more significance than a poor rendition of the anthem

Dissol here, not DBS.
In Scotland, (especially when we play the auld enemy), they generally only play the first verse of Flower of Scotland, but then the crowd sings the second verse, unaccompanied. That makes a huge impression to me (we may lose the Rugby later, but we feel good for a minute or two as we remind the English about how we sent Long Shanks homeward to think again!!)
