A hard-line approach has been adapted. It is typified by the shoot-to-kill rhetoric that has caused problems already.
Certainly, we do need to take a tough line against crime.
Unfortunately, the government have not thought the whole process through. Fighting crime starts at the top. We need clean government. The president and capbinet must be seen to be upright citizens that would never dream of accepting a bribe. Instead, evasive tactics were used.
Hints of corruption at the top send the wrong message. The message is garbled. Corruption in the police has the same effect. Who hasn't been asked for a bribe?
Criminals get the message that we are all the same. Everyone will commit a crime if they can get away with it.
This message has to change. We need a properly trained and paid police service and clean government.
Then by all means take a tough line.
