The first night I installed everything, thursday night. I was tired and frankly thought that Ubuntu being what it is, would be easy to find my way around. When I switched my PC on on friday, the system had changed. all the setting from the night before were proper fucked. So I re-installed.
The real problem after repeated installations was the fact that the browser, Firefox only allowed browsing. Of sites that didnt require a login. With the exception of www.mydl.co.za So I checked, google worked but gmail didnt. Nor did facebook after i entered in my log in details, or twitter or wordpress. FNB and FNB connect were inaccessible. So I found Chronium (thank you Charmed) and I deleted cookies (thank you Source). The other browsers had the same problem. Which leads me to conclude that the actual Ubuntu OS as presented on the disk was the problem.
Now I have never had a problem with Ubuntu. I installed it at my former job and had my internet and email working on a matter of minutes. 9.04 worked like a dream. And the promised support from the vendor (can I mention his name here?) amounted to zero.
That is the problem when it comes to competing against Microsoft. Unless there is a standard of quality (Ok so maybe quality is the wrong word when it comes to Microsoft) but there is not back up and after sales. Not the kind that doesnt make you feel like you just wasted a few hundred Rand.
So I welcome any and all comment from Ununtu 9.10 and Studio 9.10 users and if they have had similar experiences.
My diagnosis, and my software experience is limited, is that the package that I installed was faulty. hence every browser I installed was faulty. How else can I explain that when I installed old Kubuntu everything was ok, yet on 9.10 all the browsers had the same problem. limited access.
Random thoughts.

I've been using Ubuntu for a couple of months and downloaded Version 9.10 last week. I had no problem downloading the upgrade and it has worked without any problems. I never had to download onto disk though, so that may be the difference. There are a couple of eccentricities though- on facebook and mydl it sometimes inserts the incorrect letters when typing. I had keyboard issues with the previous version as well, with the pound sign(£) completely missing and the 'at' sign(@) in a different place- not that much of a problem while living in SA but a problem when living in London. The pound sign (£) is quite important while communicating over here! This seemed to have been fixed in 9.10. So overall I have to say that I'm happy with 9.10 so far. It certainly beats Vista for speed!
